To combine or not combine?

The jury is still out– for me at least.

Today, I did both. I did not worry about proper food combining at breakfast:

I mixed a starch with nut butter! It was a pumpkin-less batch this morning (just wasn’t feeling the pumpkin this morning…), featuring 1/3 cup oat bran, 1 cup water, cinnamon, nutmeg, stevia and maple syrup. Topped off with a dallop of raw almond butter. And it was absolutely delicious.

According to Dr. Hyman, and many others for that matter, this is a perfect breakfast– mixing complex carbs, protein and fat to stabilize my blood sugar. I must say, it kept me totally satisfied until 1pm today!

I’m also enjoying this feeling of “breaking the rules” lately (rules from The Raw Food Detox Diet, a book I hold in very high regard). I felt very rebelious today about:  a) miscombining, b) skipping my green juice, and c) drinking coffee! After MONTHS of pre-wedding restriction, I think I deserve a a little time off from all my old rules. Plus, I know myself, and I won’t start following those rules again until I’m good and ready– both mentally and physically. And if I start pushing myself before I’m good and ready, I know it will end in a binge. Who’s to say what is really the right way to eat anyway? There are plenty of healthy people out there who miscombine at every meal! (The Fitnessista talked about this on her blog a little while ago, too. I love that she proudly doesn’t worry about food combining!)

For lunch, I did feel like properly combining. I had a nice, green salad to start:

A simple mix of greens and cherry tomatoes, topped with an oh-so-simple dressing: fresh-squeezed lemon juice, 3 drops of liquid stevia and a splash of EVOO. Nice and refreshing!

I followed my enzyme-rich salad, with some more Scrambled Egg Heaven:

With a couple of improvements! I sauteed some red onions in a bit of EVOO until tender, then scrambled in three brown organic eggs. When the eggs were almost done cooking, I added in a handful of fresh spinach so it would just wilt before serving. Then I topped it off with one ounce of soft goat cheese at the end, and a sprinkle of sea salt and pepper. Perfect.

I paired my eggs with another round of steamed broccoli and zucchini:

And now I’m full. I was kind of craving something sweet after lunch today, but I opted to stay properly combined– and skipped out on my regular lunchtime macaroon. :(    For now, my Candy Cane green tea is (almost) satisfying me… of course, I can barely lift my mug because I’m so SORE from my workout yesterday! I think it’s going to be a cardio-only day for me today!

**Interesting article I read today:
Another reason you should STOP drinking diet soda!

(Fortunately for me, I can’t stand the fake stuff! It’s either real soda or nothin’ for me!)
