“Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.” -Michael Pollan
I believe in eating whole, unprocessed foods as often as possible. Our health depends on it! Eating an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables keeps our body alkaline, which has been shown to prevent disease. The more leafy greens we add to our diet, the more oxygenated our bodies become! Germs, bacteria, and cancer cells can’t thrive in an oxygenated environment, so the more greens we eat, the better!
That being said, I want to prove that eating healthy can also be indulgent! Not many people want to munch on a plain bag of salad ALL DAY LONG! I may eat healthy food, but I enjoy every single bite of it! You don’t even have to give up your favorite foods– just choose higher quality versions of them! I make a mean detox lasagna, so I don’t miss the “traditional” version at all!
For me, it’s not about dieting or calorie-counting. In my experience, diets lead to disordered eating– and believe me, I’ve been there! I know what it’s like to be consumed with thoughts of food! It’s not unusual for me to be eating lunch, and already thinking about what I’m going to have for dinner! The only way to break the cycle, is to make healthy compromises you can live with. (and getting therapy, if you truly are suffering from an eating disorder!) For me, I’m not willing to give up cheese or dessert! So I try to fill myself up with lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and make higher quality choices with the foods I love– raw goat cheddar tastes amazing, and is easier to digest than cow’s dairy! I also choose whole grains, like quinoa and millet, and make all sorts of delicious desserts that are far healthier than the packaged junk you find at the grocery store. It’s all about making changes you can live with for the rest of your life!
In addition to choosing higher quality ingredients, I also aim to properly combine my food. For the most part, I avoid mixing starches and proteins at any given meal. Starches and proteins require different enzymes for digestion, and mixing them will lead to gas, bloating, and accumulated waste in the body. That’s not to say I do it “perfectly” all the time– but I try to keep it in mind when I can. And the more you properly combine your foods, the more you notice when you don’t! By relieving my body from heavy digestion, I feel lighter and have more energy to do the things I love!
Here’s a peek at some of my favorite foods:
Vegan, refined-sugar-free Banana Bread
…and much, much more!
See what I mean? Health really can be indulgent!
I hope you all choose to indulge with me– this tasty lifestyle should be shared!
